"Be
Optimistic" Comedy by: Horace "HB"
Sanders
In April
2003, Horace “HB” Sanders became
the newest $100,000 comedy category winner on CBS’s
Star Search.
Amidst
a plethora of black comics receiving exposure today,
very few have been able to stand out doing stand up
without using profanity. Horace “HB” Sanders
has found the key to success in the world of laughter
without being profane…being himself! Born in Detroit,
Michigan, he received his education and comedic start
at the University of Michigan. Now you can catch Horace
on BET Comic View, or traveling throughout the country
working with the hottest comedians in America!
Whether
he’s performing in a church, comedy club, or sold
out arena, his comedic style highlights life’s
more hilarious moments. He has flexibility and range
of material that few comedians possess. He has the ability
to see the humor in anything. Of course, what makes
him stand out most is that he holds his own in performances
with all of today’s premier comedians…while
“keeping it clean!”
Horace
is also part of Crying for Laughter Productions
Higher Education Campaign, which reaches out
to the marginalized and disenfranchised students in
our school systems.
Horace
has the unique ability of transforming a stage into
a living room, as he changes from the comedian you don’t
know, to the silly friend you love.
Once
you've seen Horace perform, you'll know what a smile
sounds like! |

Dreamers
and Doers Motivational
Moments by Lauren
Hudson
LAUREN'S STORY
My life hasn't been
easy, but I'm not complaining, because it has certainly
been interesting.
I have faced Cancer,
Divorce (twice), Single-parenthood, Foreclosure, Repossession
& Bankruptcy, and Depression.
I was diagnosed with
Breast Cancer in 1999, just 6 weeks after my mother
was diagnosed with terminal Lung Cancer. At the same
time my mother was fighting her battle, I was undergoing
cancer treatment, which included surgery, chemotherapy,
and radiation. I was exhausted & confused.
When my mother passed
away, I slipped into a period of darkness. I isolated
myself from the rest of the world. Many days, I didn't
even go out of the house. Instead, I would lie on the
couch in my pajamas for days at a time, watching television.
(You know you're in trouble when the highlight of your
day is watching soap operas, game shows, and Jerry Springer!)
However, for the longest
time, I didn't realized I was depressed. My impression
of depression was people who thought of killing themselves.
But, I had never considered suicide. After about two
years of denial, I realized I needed help. I started
looking for answers to this insidious problem.
I thought of my mother,
and how, even when she was facing the fight of her life,
always managed to smile. I knew I had to find my smile.
I used my curious skills as a reporter, and started
digging deeper, knowing there is always another side
to the story. Instead of focusing on Depression, I decided
to flip it around, and concentrate on Happiness.
Now, I have turned my
misery into my ministry. I am spreading the word on
Happiness.

"Frontline"
Poem from the CD , "Sketches of My Culture, by Dr.
Cornel West
Cornel West, Professor of Religion
and African
American Studies at Princeton University, is one of
America’s most gifted, provocative, and important
public intellectuals. Dr. West has won numerous awards,
including the American Book Award, and has received more
than 20 honorary degrees.
His work has been described as a “polemical weapon
that attempts to transform linguistic, social, cultural,
and political tradition to increase the scope of individual
development and democratic actions.” West’s
writing, speaking, and teaching weaves together the
American traditions of the Baptist Church, transcendentalism,
socialism, and pragmatism.
West and Derek 'D.O.A.' Allen
produced a CD titled Sketches
of My Culture in 2001, "a poignant yet inviting
depiction of the African American experience that begins
with the rich African heritage to and through the black
American experience.
"The New York Times describes
Dr. West as "A Professor Who Can Rap the Rap"
and describes Sketches as "a spoken-word album
that infuses poetry with rap, jazz and blues...(taking)
topics that could easily be lecture subjects and turning
them into song". |

Positive
Moments by: Samuel
Vance
Samuel J. Vance is the President & CEO of TalkingGreen.com.
He is a former commentator for The Black Orange Magazine.
Samual Vance was the Press Secretary for Democratic Candidate
Ted Crisel in the 2000 election. Ted Crisel ran against
Congressman Dana Rohrabacher in California's Republican
dominated 45th District. In the 1990's Mr. Vance established
a recycled magazine sharing program for prisoners called
the Back in the World project. The concept is simple:
more than 90% of prisoners will be released back into

transition back into society.
Samuel Vance is also the creator and producer of the

of commentary dealing with an eclectic range of subjects
that are geared towards the black media. The goal is
to be solution orientated. The flagship station of a
